The Tour de France is just a few weeks away and speculation is rife about who will be the strongest heading into a very unusual edition.
Last year, Egan Bernal became the first Colombian to ever win the Tour and the youngest rider to reach the top step in the post-war era, which also makes him the most junior pro to take home the yellow jersey (introduced in 1919).
But with the Tour de France delayed in 2020 due to the coronavirus and the cycling season completely redesigned, this will be a Tour like not other.
With some surprise results in last year’s Tour, the bookmakers have released their predictions for who will win the Tour de France 2020.
There are some unexpected picks for the general classification next year, although less outlandish is the fact that Egan Bernal (Team Ineos) is favourite to win a second Tour, at 9/4.
The second favourite to claim the yellow jersey is Jumbo-Visma’s Primož Roglič – which is a fairly safe option considering his dominant performance in the 2019 Vuelta a España and his convincing victory over Team Ineos at the Tour de l’Ain this year. Roglič currently sits at 5/2.
Next on the list of potential winners is French start Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ), who won over plenty of fans with his courageous racing in last year’s Tour and his heartbreaking abandonment due to injury in the final week. Despite being quiet since last year’s edition, Pinot sits at 10/1.
The fourth favourite for victory is another rider coming back from injury, this time Tom Dumoulin (Jumbo-Visma) at 14/1. Dumoulin is a former Giro d’Italia winner and finished second at the 2018 Tour, but hasn’t had much racing over the last year after crashing out of the Giro and being forced to skip the Tour due to a persisting knee injury.
Winner of the 2018 Tour and second-place finisher in 2019 Geraint Thomas (Team Ineos) has equal odds with Dumoulin at 14/1.
Young star Tadej Pogačar is a hot pick for the bookies, as the 21-year-old is at 16/1 after his strong podium in last year’s Vuelta a España.
But controversially four-time winner Chris Froome is low in the pecking order, with the bookies putting him at 20/1. But with his form still in doubt after his serious injury from last season, many doubt whether Froome will be taken to the Tour.
Other notable mentions according to the bookies include Deceuninck – Quick-Step’s Julian Alaphilippe (20/1) who was the star rider of last year’s Tour and a resurgent Nairo Quintana (Arkéa-Samsic) who is currently 33/1 to win.
